This private overland journey is recommended for travelers who want to experience the diversity of South Sulawesi without rushing. The program combines Makassar’s historical heritage, the limestone landscape of Rammang-Rammang, Bira’s tropical coast, the rice fields of Kampung Galung, Lejja’s natural hot springs, and the living traditions of Toraja.
Ten days and nine nights is a comfortable duration because several destinations are connected by long, mountainous roads. Travel times are estimates and may change because of traffic, road conditions, weather, meal stops, and local events.
Day 1: Arrival and Makassar City Tour
Estimated schedule: 9:00 AM–6:00 PM
Meet your guide at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport or your Makassar hotel. Begin the city tour at Fort Rotterdam, one of Makassar’s most important historical landmarks. Visit the La Galigo Museum and the former detention room associated with Prince Diponegoro.
Continue through Makassar’s old town and Chinatown, passing colonial buildings, traditional shops, temples, and the city’s former trading district. After lunch, visit Fort Somba Opu, the 99 Domes Mosque, and Losari Beach. Enjoy sunset and try local food such as coto Makassar, grilled fish, or pisang epe.
Day 2: Rammang-Rammang Karst Adventure

Depart from Makassar after breakfast. The drive to Rammang-Rammang normally takes approximately 1.5–2 hours. Board a traditional motorized wooden boat and travel along the Pute River, surrounded by nipa palms, wetlands, and dramatic limestone towers.
Explore Kampung Laku Stone Forest, Labyrinth Cave, Batu Tianang prehistoric site, and Kampung Berua. Depending on the selected route and the guests’ fitness level, the program may include Fireflies Cave and approximately three kilometres of walking.
Lunch can be served at a local restaurant or village café. Return by boat and drive back to Makassar in the afternoon.
Day 3: Makassar to Bira, Bulukumba
Travel south through Takalar, Jeneponto, Bantaeng, and Bulukumba. Stop for lunch and visit Tana Beru, where local craftspeople build traditional Phinisi wooden vessels using knowledge passed down through generations.
Continue to Tanjung Bira and check in near Bira or Bara Beach. Spend the late afternoon relaxing, walking along the white-sand beach, or enjoying sunset from the coastal cliffs.
Day 4: Bira Island and Coastal Tour

After breakfast, take a local boat to Liukang Loe Island. Swim and snorkel in clear tropical water, weather and sea conditions permitting. Snorkeling equipment and life jackets should be prepared in advance.
Return to Bira for lunch. In the afternoon, visit Panrangluhu Beach, Apparalang’s limestone coast, or another viewpoint selected according to road and weather conditions. Guests who prefer a quieter day may remain at the beach.
Enjoy a second sunset and dinner in Bira.
Overnight: Bira
Day 5: Bira to Kampung Galung, Sinjai
Leave Bira and travel through Bulukumba and Sinjai toward Kampung Galung in Barania Village, West Sinjai. The route gradually changes from coastal scenery to cooler mountain landscapes.
After arrival, meet community representatives or a local guide and explore the village’s rice fields, agricultural landscape, and rural settlements. Depending on the season, visitors may observe planting, harvesting, or other farming activities. Local coffee, simple traditional snacks, or a home-cooked dinner may be arranged.
Day 6: Kampung Galung to Lejja Hot Springs
Enjoy breakfast and a final village walk before departing for Soppeng. This is a slow overland day on regional and mountainous roads, so several rest and photography stops are recommended.
Arrive in the Lejja area during the afternoon. Check in and relax in the natural hot-spring pools. Pool temperatures and facilities vary, so guests should enter gradually and follow local safety instructions.
Day 7: Lejja to Rantepao, Toraja
After breakfast, enjoy another short hot-spring visit before continuing north through South Sulawesi’s agricultural heartland. Stop for lunch on the road and take a break near the Bambapuang mountain viewpoint if the route and weather permit.
Arrive in Rantepao in the late afternoon or early evening. Check in, have dinner, and rest before exploring Toraja.
Day 8: Southern Toraja Cultural Tour

Explore the southern and central parts of Toraja. Visit Kete Kesu, famous for its Tongkonan houses, rice barns, woodcarving, and burial area. Continue to Londa, where coffins and ancestral remains are kept in limestone caves and cliff chambers.
After lunch, visit the cliff graves and tau-tau figures at Lemo. End the day at Buntu Burake, known for its panoramic highland views and large Jesus Christ statue.
A licensed local Toraja guide is strongly recommended because burial sites are sacred cultural places with specific customs.
Overnight: Rantepao
Day 9: Northern Toraja, Villages and Rice Terraces

Travel into North Toraja to visit Kalimbuang Bori, where ceremonial stone monuments commemorate important ancestral funerals. Continue to traditional settlements such as Palawa or Sa’dan, depending on accessibility.
Explore Batutumonga or another highland viewpoint overlooking rice terraces, villages, and distant mountains. A short village walk can be included for guests who enjoy light trekking.
If a Rambu Solo’ funeral ceremony, thanksgiving ceremony, or local market is taking place, the itinerary may be adjusted respectfully. Ceremonies are genuine family events, not staged performances, so visitors must follow their guide’s instructions and prepare an appropriate contribution.
Overnight: Rantepao
Day 10: Toraja to Makassar
Depart early and travel through Enrekang, Pinrang, Parepare, Barru, and Maros. Stop for lunch and short breaks along the journey.
Arrival in Makassar depends on traffic and weather. International or domestic flights should be booked after 9:30 PM. For greater security, guests with an earlier flight should add one final night in Makassar, making the program eleven days and ten nights.

The standard program includes nine nights: two nights in Makassar, two in Bira, one in Kampung Galung, one near Lejja, and three in Rantepao. Mid-range hotels with private bathrooms and breakfast are recommended, except in Kampung Galung, where facilities may be basic.
